Greene County RamsSummer school will be starting up soon in the Greene County School District.

District Reading Specialist Julie Neal says about 15-20 students in each grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade have qualified for summer school. It is for students who are not proficient in their reading levels based on criteria from the universal screeners. The criteria that is used includes Formative Assessment System for Teachers (FAST), Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading (STAR) and the Iowa Assessments. Additionally, Neal says they use Fountas and Pinnell as a benchmark for kindergarten through sixth grade to further determine if those students are proficient in their reading level.

Summer school will be from July 17th through 20th, then from July 24th through the 27th and July 31st through August 3rd. It will be from 9:30 to 11:45am. All students, with the exception of eighth graders, will meet at the elementary school. Eighth graders will be at the high school in the READ 180 program.

The students will learn about phonics and comprehension skills, as well as real-world learning during summer school to help them become proficient in reading before the start of the next school year.
