The Greene County Historical Society will once again show off their collection of historical items and continue their special presentations during the county fair.

The historical building on the fairgrounds will be open tomorrow from 4 to 7pm, as well as Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm both days. The public can view displays of antique farming equipment, as well as accessories of rural life. Plus, the one-room schoolhouse “Bristol No. 5” will be open the same hours as the historical building. Residents Marilynn Hoskinson and Becki Cunningham will portray teachers from the schoolhouse time period about what education was like in the county.

There will also be six “History Chats” on Friday and Saturday that will be moderated by Jerry Roberts and Chuck Offenburger. Friday’s chats begin at 11am with Alma Shorey Young of Jefferson, who once managed the Milligan Brothers grain elevator in Jefferson. Then at 1pm will be a presentation by Raccoon Valley Radio’s own Doug Rieder reviewing some of the best Greene County sports stories. Finally at 3pm on Friday will be a review of several area high school fight songs from the different years.

Saturday’s “History Chats” will start at 11am with a presentation on Joe and Tony Hornick from Churdan who operated their own informal bank. At 1pm will be a review of stories on the Greene County Courthouse with presenters Tori Riley and Don Van Gilder who are on the Courthouse 100 Committee, as the historical courthouse celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The last presentation will take place at 3pm about the Bradshaws, a four-to-five generation barber shop family that dates back over 100 years.

Both Friday and Saturday’s chats will end with an ice cream social at 4pm.
