The high school baseball season ended on Monday night for the Greene County Rams. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team fell to Class 3A defending State champion and number one rated Harlan Community, 4-2, in the 3A District 15 title game at Jim Goeser Field in Harlan. The Rams finish the season with a 14-13 record while the Cyclones are 33-2 and host 17-20 Denison-Schleswig tomorrow night for the Substate 8 title and a trip to next week’s State Tournament in Des Moines.
Greene County fell behind 1-0 in the first inning on a single and two errors. Harlan made it 2-0 in the fourth after a walk, SAC bunt, a ground out, and a wild pitch. The home team added two more runs in the fifth on four singles, a balk, and a throwing error. The two runs for the Rams were in the seventh inning. Trey Tucker was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and Austin Delp reached on an infield error. Tucker scored when Ben Bravard’s one out ground ball to third was fielded cleanly, and Delp scored when the third baseman made an errant throw.
Chase Stoline started the game with an infield hit, which was the only hit off winning pitcher Josh Cheek, who kept the Rams off balance all night with an array of off-speed pitches.
Ben Wilkins took the loss, going the first 4-1/3 innings. Delp threw the final 1-2/3.
The Rams finished with three errors and Harlan was charged with two, both in the last inning.
