The new Greene County High School head football coach has only been with the school for five months, but he’s making a big impact on each of the communities.
Mitch Moore says from day one as the head coach, he wanted to instill in his coaching staff and players a sense of pride in their communities and the athletic department.
“How do you get that? Well it isn’t just talking about it, you’ve got to get out in your community, you’ve got to see what your community is all about and you’ve got to go to the towns of Grand Junction, and Scranton, and Paton and right here in Jefferson. And help out and lend a hand. I think it’s been really neat.”
Last month alone, the football players have volunteered over 250 hours of community service through various activities like picking up garbage in Grand Junction, helped out with Relay for Life and Bell Tower Festival. Moore points out that he’s been very impressed with how his players have reacted.
“Everyday I’ll put something on the board, ‘Hey we can do this, this afternoon, or we can do this, this weekend.’ I’ve never had to say, ‘Guys, if we don’t get ten guys, I’m going to assign guys.’ I’ve never had to do that once. Before the next day, those ten spots are filled and kids are just volunteering their time to really get out in the community and help.”
He adds that feedback from community members has been positive and he hopes to continue to have his players volunteering in each community.
