The City of Perry has been a part of a class action lawsuit involving flushable wipes, and after a long litigation process, a settlement has been reached.
The lawsuit stemmed from flushable wipes supposedly causing issues for the sewer systems of several municipalities. Perry agreed to join the suit against the companies that make them, and agreed to help pay for the legal services. As the process proceeded, it eventually became clear there was no way for the cities to prove the wipes in question were from the manufacturer, and conversely there was no way for the manufacturer to prove they weren’t theirs.
In the end, it was determined it was in everyone’s best interest to settle the suit out of court. Perry will be reimbursed for the costs associated with the case from the settlement. While the outcome wasn’t the best-case scenario for the cities, Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson felt it was a good compromise and both parties have come out of it relatively well.
