It’s National Farmers Market Week this week.
The Greene County Farmers Market features locally grown produce, baked goods, meat, crafts and other products.
Deal’s Orchard is one of the main vendors of the market and they sell a variety of items, including their two staples which are apples and sweet corn. Benji Deal explains why they continue to be vendors at the local farmers market.
“First off it’s just a great market. We get a huge turnout up here and it’s well run. We just enjoy coming up, talking to people and getting our name out there a little bit more for people that don’t realize that we’re here in town. But we have a really great time here and just a lot of good people up here that we get to see and talk to.”
Mike Holden, owner of Moo Meat in Scranton, is also a vendor and he says the farmers market is a great way for people to see and speak to the people that they buy produce and meat from.
“There’s a movement, a strong movement for people to know where they’re meat and their food comes from. ‘Know what you eat’ is kind of a phrase they use in some of the farmers markets. I think that’s very appropriate here. Everybody here represents what we produce and it’s a great chance to meet those local producers too.”
The Greene County Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 4 to 6pm on the eastside of the courthouse in Jefferson through the end of September.
