The Iowa State Patrol reports that at just after 4 p.m. a car driven by 34-year-old Bethany Wheeler of Minneapolis, Minnesota was travelling eastbound. She slowed down near mile marker 99 due to traffic caused by an earlier accident. A semi driven by 28-year-old William Grother of Parker, South Dakota failed to brake in time and rear-ended Wheeler’s vehicle. The momentum of the collision also involved a van driven by 40-year-old Matt Robinson of Illinois. The semi and car both came to rest in the median. The semi was carrying pigs, and several escaped when it rolled over.

The two-year-old passenger in Wheeler’s vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Wheeler was taken by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with serious injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts. Grother and Robinson were uninjured in the crash. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.
