The first football game of the 2017 season for the Greene County Rams was also the first game for several members of the Rams’ coaching staff, at least in their current capacities. The Rams fell 21-14 at home last Friday to Kuemper Catholic in non-district play.
Head Coach Mitch Moore is a head coach for the first time. Quarterbacks coach Cole Jaeschke, offensive line coach Nick Fett, and linebackers coach Levi Peters all coached in their first high school game. The same is true for some of the volunteer coaches. Secondary coach Zach Beekman is in his first season on the high school staff after coaching on the middle school level, and even veteran Mark Sawhill has switched sides of the ball. After many years coaching the offensive line, he’s now coaching defensive linemen.
Coach Moore thought the assistant coaches did well in the opener. “We have some adjustments to make, and I thought I made some mistakes, which I owned up to and told the kids about, but, overall, we did well. And, even though we lost, it was a lot of fun for all of us. We saw some great things out of our players, and our coaches, too.”
The Rams host Harlan Community on Sept. 1 at Linduska Field. Coverage on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
