Alice Walters recently celebrated her 101st birthday and was one of the honorees as this year’s class to be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. She began her career in 4-H at nine-years-old. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1938 with a degree in home economics. Greene County Extension Director Lori Mannel says in her over 90-years of 4-H experience, Walters is responsible for innovations such as starting the idea of record book keeping for 4-H’ers.
“Those record books are still going on. Kids either love it or hate it, but boy does it teach a lot about responsibility, and keeping accurate records, and it’s a lifelong skill. So thank you to Alice for starting that.”
She was also a judge in several 4-H achievement shows, along with county and state fairs for several years. Walters also received another local honor as the Greene County Impact Award winner in 2015, when she retired as a volunteer.
