Greene County played in the South Central Calhoun volleyball tournament in Lake City on Saturday and went 3-3 in matches and 7-6 sets. The action was the first of the 2017 season for Coach Donna Carhill’s team and the coach saw some good things. “This was the first competitive date of our season and as an inexperienced team, we did fairly well. We played right with quality teams in several games, pushed IKM-Manning to a third set, and won three matches. I saw several players really start to develop at the varsity level. We ran a quicker offense than we have in the past and served more aggressively. There is no question that we will continue to develop and improve as the season progresses and it’s exciting to think where this team will be by mid-season.”
The Rams lost to the host Titans 17-21, 9-21, fell to South Hamilton (Jewell) 12-21, 20-22, and IKM-Manning 11-21, 21-19, 10-15. They won 21-19, 21-13 vs. West Central Valley, won 21-10, 21-15 against Audubon, and won 21-11, 21-10 vs. Belmond-Klemme.
For the tournament, Samantha Hardaway was 67 of 76 serving with 12 aces. Aubrey Heupel went 40 of 50 at the service line with 12 aces, and Kaitlyn McColley was 20 of 23 with eight service aces. Megan Durbin led in kills with 49 and in digs with 38. Heupel had 75 assists while Chantel Flack had 29 digs.
