The annual Prairie Awakening Celebration is returning this Sunday to the Kuehn Conservation Area, bringing with it the culture of those native to Dallas County.
Forest Park Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says this year there’s a new name, though the educators from years past will be returning. “It is now the Prairie Awoke Celebration. So it’ll give you an opportunity to reconnect with a number of our old friends: Dallas Chief Eagle, who is a championship hoop dancer; Jerome Kills Small, a wonderful Lakota historian and storyteller, a direct descendant of Man Afraid of His Horses and some of the famous chiefs of the Indian Wars; and Rob Knuth, who’s a really well-known spiritual leader of the Lakotas and some of the other groups around here.”
The presenters will give examples of dances, share stories, and present the history of the Prairie Awakening. The festivities will be held at the prairie arena at Kuehn this Sunday from 5-9 p.m. There is no cost for the event and no preregistration is required. For more information, call 515-465-3577.
