On the heels of Hurricane Harvey, Irma is hitting Florida and the surrounding U.S. coastline. While the Hawkeye State is far from the devastation, Iowans are rushing to the Southeast to help in any way they can.
As of Thursday, 61 Iowa Red Cross staff and volunteers from around the state have traveled to Texas and Florida to assist in the relief efforts. Even if you can’t be there physically, there are several other ways to help the relief efforts. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Bob Kempf suggests donating to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or local Church groups.
One thing Kempf does not suggest donating is clothing. “They literally have rooms upon rooms, gymnasiums full of clothing that they can’t use. What that does is it just plugs up the entire donation drive.”
