The ACGC Charger football team was looking for a little momentum to kick start the remainder of their season. The Chargers are out of playoff contention, but knew a homecoming win would be a satisfying consolation prize. The Chargers gave a spectacular effort with a limited healthy squad, but came up short against the Treynor Cardinals, falling 14-9.
ACGC started the game with several changes to both sides of the ball and were forced to turn the offensive playbook upside-down. Senior Caden Wardyn became the focal point of the offense, taking several direct snaps and pitches. The offense seemed to elevate out of nowhere and the Treynor defense was on their heels throughout the game.
Treynor started the scoring with a three yard quarterback keeper from sophomore Jacob Fisher. The Chargers blocked the extra point attempt and the Cardinals led 6-0. On the next possession, the Chargers marched down the field but couldn’t punch it in the end zone, settling for a Will Byars 27 yard field goal. It didn’t take long for the Cardinals to extend their now three point lead, as Kyle Christensen zipped past the Charger defense for a 56 yard rushing touchdown. The Cardinals added a two-point conversion to go up 14-3.
Then ACGC went on one of their best drives of the season. Wardyn led the way down the field, and capped off a methodical drive with a 13 yard rushing touchdown, his first of the season. The Chargers two-point conversion failed, and the score was now 14-9. The scoring ended there, as neither team scored in the second half. The Chargers had several chances to take the lead in the second half, but just seemed out of gas in the fourth quarter. Despite a heroic effort from an ill Logan Brinks, the Chargers fell to 1-5 on the season. Treynor improves to 3-3.
The Chargers will hit the road to battle IKM-Manning next Friday.
