A unique fundraiser is happening this weekend to benefit a local cause.

Jefferson Telecom is sponsoring a Scavenger Hunt fundraiser for the Shop with a Cop program. The Shop with a Cop program was started three years ago by the Greene County Peace Officer Association. The program allows about 15 children to shop for holiday gifts for themselves and their families, while being accompanied by the Jefferson Police Department, Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says he enjoys Shop with a Cop.

“It’s a great experience. It’s nice to see the kids with a smile on their face when they’re picking out presents for themselves or their family members. The kids even afterwards will still wave at you because they never forget that experience with us.”

Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse echoes Williams’s comments and how Shop with a Cop relates to him.

“That’s one of my favorite days of the year. I kind of put it towards when your children are young, having Christmas with your children and that excitement. Now as you get older and have grandchildren, watching your grandchildren Christmas morning, this is the same thing. These kids are all great and we have a great time.”

The Scavenger Hunt takes place from 9 to 11am Saturday. Teams of four must call Jefferson Telecom to register with a $100 fee, with all proceeds benefiting Shop with a Cop. A mobile application will be used for the event with clues and tasks in downtown Jefferson to be completed by taking photos or videos. The winning team will receive $200 in Greene County Chamber and Tourism Checks. Call 386-6021 or stop by Jefferson Telecom to sign up.
