On Monday, the Greene County Supervisors discussed concerns with the process of selecting a new county assessor.
Current Greene County Assessor Linda Spearman is going to retire on November 30th. According to Iowa Code, the process starts with the Examining Board. The three-person board includes: Tom Feldman, Randy Monthei and Sherry Palmer. The job of the Examining Board is to make a recommendation for an individual to fill the position. The Board sends a request to the state of Iowa for all qualified applicants who have passed the assessor and deputy assessor examination given by the Iowa Department of Revenue.
The recommendation then goes to the Conference Board. That Board is made up of three entities including: The County Supervisors, the city mayors and representatives from the Greene County and Paton-Churdan School districts.
Each entity can caucus whether or not to accept the recommendation. Then each entity on the Conference Board will vote based on the outcome of their caucus. It is a three-person vote.
The main concern voiced by the Supervisors was the timetable in which to make the final decision.
The Iowa Code allows for a seven-day window for a decision to be made from when the assessor seat will be vacant. The Conference Board can either make their decision before the seven day window or after Spearman retires at the end of next month.
A recommendation has already been made to the Conference Board last Thursday. However, the Board has yet to make a final decision.
This will be the first time Greene County will have a new assessor in 12 years.
