Greene County lost at Gilbert on Friday night 37-31 in Class 3A District 2 football to fall to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the district. The Tigers improved to 2-5 and 2-3. The game time was moved up to 5 p.m. due to the weather forecast, and the teams nearly made it to the finish before lightning delayed the game for 54 minutes. The delay took place with just 2:15 of game time remaining. Very heavy rain also took place, but by the time play resumed, it all had drained off the all-weather artificial playing field.

Penalties and turnovers were a factor for both teams, as they usually are. We accent the positive plays today. Will Hansen intercepted a Gilbert pass on the final play of the first half and Joe Towers and Austin Delp had fumble recoveries. Delp had the ball pop into his hands at the Greene County goal line and the Towers fumble recovery was at the Rams 15. Greene County scored after both turnovers, putting together 93 and 85 yard scoring drives.

Carter Morton and Xavier Hayes combined for a 99 yard touchdown on a kickoff return. Morton caught the ball in the air at the one and handed it to Hayes, who went untouched to the end zone. Quarterback Clint Dennhardt found a wide open Lance Hughes for a 56 yard touchdown pass, and Dennhardt had scoring runs of 12 and 10 yards. Colby Kafer ran for 167 yards on 22 carries, including a 71 yard scoring jaunt.

The Rams totaled nearly 400 yards of offense vs. Gilbert with 306 on the ground and 86 through the air.

Next up is the Annual Battle for the Cowbell as Greene County faces Perry (2-5, 1-4) at Dewey Field. The game will be broadcast on KG98, KDLS, and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
