One of Iowa’s oldest high school football rivalry’s resumes tonight when Greene County visits Perry in what has become known as “The Battle for the Cowbell.” In 1928, the Rotary Clubs of Jefferson and Perry donated a cowbell that resides with the winning team until the game the next year. The series itself goes back to 1898 when the Perry YMCA team defeated the Jefferson High School team.
The Rams are 1-6 overall while Perry is 2-5. Both teams have 1-4 records in Class 3A District 2. Tonight’s “Cowbell Game” is the first for Greene County head coach Mitch Moore. He told Raccoon Valley Radio he’s heard about this game ever since he took the job in March. “It’s certainly a storied history and a game that goes back generations. It’s a game that brings out a lot of pride in both schools, so we’re excited to get to play in this game. I think both teams are excited and there’s something just a little bit extra about this game and I’ll find out more about that tonight.”
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Dewey Field in Perry with coverage on KG98, KDLS 1310 AM and 99.7 FM, and streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com starting at 6:30 p.m
