The high school football season is nearly over for the Greene County Rams. Coach Mitch Moore’s team is 1-7 overall and 1-5 in Class 3A District 2 following Friday’s overtime loss at Perry, 17-14. The Rams host the Ballard (Huxley) Bombers on Oct. 20 at Linduska Field to close out the 2017 campaign. Coach Moore is a Ballard graduate and played for current Ballard head coach Al Christian.

The loss at Perry was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Blue Jays scored on their first possession of each half. Four turnovers and key penalties kept them from putting more points on the board. Greene County couldn’t get the offense going until the last nine minutes of regulation. A 55 yard, six play scoring drive got the Rams on the board with 5:34 remaining when Clint Dennhardt found a wide open Lance Hughes for a 39 yard touchdown. Leo Marques kicked the extra point to make it 14-7.

The tying drive was a clinic in the two minute drill as the Rams had just one timeout and needed to travel 89 yards, which they did, on 13 plays. Carter Morton caught a one yard pass from Dennhardt to make it 14-13. The Rams were penalized 15 yards following the TD, which made the Marques extra point a 35 yard try, which he drilled. Of the Rams 275 yards of offense, 145 was accumulated on the two fourth quarter drives.

Wade Adcock and Joe Towers had fumble recoveries, while Austin Delp and Xavier Hayes intercepted Perry passes. The only turnover by the Rams was a pass interception in OT on fourth and goal from the 18.

Perry’s German Alvaranga kicked a game-winning 18 yard field goal to end the overtime contest.
