Jefferson City Council 10_10The Jefferson City Council recently set their priorities for the 2018 fiscal year budget.

At their meeting last week, the Council held their annual budget priority workshop. The top five priorities that the Council would like the city staff to focus next fiscal year’s budget on includes: housing, entrances into the city, obtaining grants, animal shelter and supporting Jefferson Matters: Main Street. City Administrator Mike Palmer talks about the Council’s top priority of housing.

“We’ve heard that there’s just a lack of housing because of all the new jobs in town. We want to get some affordable housing in there. That seems to be the key right now is the housing isn’t available for the workers who are in the $10-$15 hour range.”

He adds that there are 25 to 30 different items that the Council prioritizes every year, but Palmer notes that the Council monitors all of the items.

“Just because it’s not right at the top doesn’t mean it’s not important. There are some things that come up that are not on the list at all but they are still being attended to. There are multiple reasons why things move around on this list but that’s why it’s important that we have this gathering every year to determine what the priorities are.”
