As we turn back our clocks by one hour, it’s also a good time to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams reminds everyone that when checking smoke detectors, ensure they are clear of any dust and other obstructions and change out the batteries.

Additionally, the Iowa Department of Public Health recommends also checking carbon monoxide detectors or installing one. Carbon monoxide doesn’t have a smell or taste to it. Symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide include: headaches, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and confusion.
