MidAmerican Energy has plans to build another 85 wind turbines in Greene County.
County Environmental Administrator Chuck Wenthold told the County Supervisors at their meeting Monday that MidAmerican Energy has submitted an application to build 85 additional wind turbines, adding to the 41 turbines in the Beaver Creek Wind Turbine project. The proposed areas for the additional turbines is south and west of Paton, west of Dana and northwest of Grand Junction.
Wenthold said the Board of Adjustment will meet sometime next month to make the final decision on the proposal from the utility company. He added that certain “conditions” can be a part of the discussion before a decision is made. The two conditions Greene County had in the original contract with MidAmerican for the 41 turbines was on road use and drainage.
Wenthold said the current 41 turbines are fully erected in Greene County and five are operational. MidAmerican plans to have all 41 turbines operational by the end of this year. There is an anticipated $21 million in property taxes the County will receive. If the Board of Adjustment approves the next proposal, the County could receive double the amount of property taxes with the expansion of the project.
