Greene County went 1-1 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference dual meet wrestling last night at Nevada. Coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams lost to the host Cubs by a 36-34 score, then nipped the Saydel Eagles by a 34-31 final. The Rams are 5-8 in dual meets and 1-2 in the conference.
Of the 13 matches vs. Nevada (no match at 106 lbs.), the Rams won seven, but all six of the Cubs’ victories were worth six points. Greene County forfeited at 145 and 182 due to injuries. The Rams had three falls, one forfeit, a major decision and two regular decisions.
Against Saydel, the Rams collected three forfeits to go with two falls and a major decision. Both teams won six times and there were no matches at 113 and 170 lbs. The Rams were without four of their regulars and the Eagles were missing at least that many wrestlers.
The final weight class vs. Saydel was 126 lbs. with Greene County trailing 31-28 before freshman Brady Stauffer won by fall in 5:33. Stauffer lost by fall vs. Nevada.
Rams going 2-0 Thursday night were freshman Chance McCollom (106/113) by forfeit and by 8-5 decision, senior Cayden Gerdes (138) by 14-4 and 13-4 major decisions, sophomore Colby Kafer (160) by fall and by forfeit, and sophomore Gage Michaelsen (220) by forfeit and by fall.
Joining Stauffer at 1-1 on the night were sophomore Garrett Tasler (120), junior Brock Wuebker (170/182), junior Bryce Hoyle (195), and junior Joe Anderson (285).
The Rams go to Carroll High tomorrow for the Tiger-Knight Invitational beginning at 10 a.m.
