Friday afternoon basketball at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines suited the Greene County boys’ team just fine as Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams were 64-44 winners over North Polk (Alleman) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action. Greene County improved to 4-1 overall and in the conference while the Comets fell to 1-7 and 1-4. The girl/boy doubleheader was broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

In one of the more balanced scoring attacks of the young season for the Rams, senior Joe Towers had 16 points with 13 from junior Trey Hinote and 11 by junior Lance Hughes. Senior Wade Adcock added eight points with six each from senior Ben Bravard and sophomore Carter Morton. Senior Ben Wilkens added four points. The Rams shot 45% from the floor in an arena that seats more than 14,000. They made six three-point shots, went 10 of 11 from there free throw line, and had only five turnovers the entire game.

The Rams scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed. A 15-4 lead after one quarter was trimmed to 20-15 in the second, but Greene County stretch it back to 12 points at 30-18 at intermission. The margin steadily grew in the second half and reserves finished the game for both squads.

The Comets had only two scoring threats in juniors Colten Parkins and Caleb Lomita. Parking had 16 of the Comets’ 18 first half points, while Lomita scored 13 of his 15 in a six minute span covering the final minute of the third quarter and first five minutes of the fourth. NP turned the ball over 15 times.

Next week sees the Rams play four games in five days starting Monday night with non-conference opponent Southeast Valley (Cowrie) visiting the Rams in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Coverage on KG98 starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at six o’clock and the boys to follow.
