Guthrie Center SignThe Guthrie Center City Council met in regular session Monday.

Region XII Regional Planner and Geological Information Systems (GIS) Technician Evan Sinnott presented the community’s source water protection plan. According to the report, in the past five years, Guthrie Center’s water has contained between two and three parts per million of nitrates. The scale goes from 1-10 with 10 being a point where the water is not safe to drink. The Council approved the plan. The council then approved the third and final reading on ordinances requiring permits for fences, garages, and other accessory buildings. The Council also set the permit cost at $15 each.

The majority of the meeting was spent reviewing and discussing three projects seeking to apply for the Community Catalyst Building Remediation Program grant. After much consideration, the Council will back the Guthrie Center Area Development Corporation’s project, on behalf of DICA. The group will apply for the full $100,000 grant. If selected the City would contribute $25,000 to the project, which would help fund an expansion plan to allow for more space for machinery and training. The project would cost $925,000, with $800,000 being financed through lenders. The other two projects up for consideration were the remodel of the Midway Motel and Main Street Guthrie Center’s renovation of the Williams Building.

The Council also discussed a special election application regarding term limits for council members and mayors. Further discussion on this matter will be held at an additional meeting, scheduled for Thursday, December 28th at 6:30 pm at City Hall.
