The final 2017 competition for the Greene County wrestlers was Saturday in Carroll at the Tiger-Knight Invitational. The Rams crowned two champions in senior Cayden Gerdes (132) and junior Brock Wuebker (170). They were seventh in the 10-team field largely due to only sending seven wrestlers onto the mats at Carroll High.

Coach Mark Sawhill’s team was more shorthanded than usual on Saturday due mainly to injuries. The coach said his team has nearly three weeks before they wrestle again and getting healthy is a focus. “We’re going to practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, then give them time  off until after Christmas. We’re missing several guys from the lineup and getting healthy and having them back in there is going to be key for us the second half of the season.”

Like most rural Iowa wrestling teams, filling most or all of the 14 weight classes leads to more victories, especially in dual meets. The Rams are 5-8 on the dual meet season. They’ve generally won when the forfeits are even or the Rams have collected more forfeit points than they’ve given. They’ve generally  lost when the opposite has happened.
