Winterset went 17-19 from the free throw line in the second half to hold off a surging Perry squad Tuesday night 61-57 in Raccoon River Conference action. The win keeps Winterset in first place in the conference with a 4-0 mark. Perry erased a seven point halftime deficit in the third quarter and went on a 22-8 run to open the fourth period with a 43-36 lead. The key moment was a six point trip down court when Drew Levan drilled a three pointer and Winterset was called for a post shot foul giving Perry the ball right back. Connor Nielsen then followed with a long three pointer to give Perry the lead.
Winterset was able to grab the lead early in the fourth quarter thanks to timely free throw shooting from Casey Kleemier. The standout went 9-9 from the foul line in the second half finishing with a team high 23 points. Perry closed the game down to two at 62-60 following a Nielsen three but Kleemier hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to seal the win for Winterset.
Nielsen finished with a team high 23 points while Rashon Ivory added 20. Brendon Ivory left the game early in the fourth quarter with a sprained ankle.
Perry falls to 2-6 and 1-3 in RRC play and will host Ogden Thursday night.
