Andy McGuireDemocratic candidate for governor Dr. Andy McGuire made a campaign stop in Jefferson Tuesday night.

The Waterloo native talked extensively about health care and mental health. She believes there was nothing wrong to implement privatizing Medicaid and that the current system is imploding on itself. She also has a seven-step, 17-page solution to the mental health issues in Iowa. McGuire pointed out that Iowa is last in the country for mental health beds and 47th in mental health providers. She also talked about bringing public education back to the forefront and looking at collective bargaining again. McGuire stated that there needs to be a review process, on an annual basis, of how tax credits are being used and if they are being used for their intent, instead of just giving it away.

She told Raccoon Valley Radio what sets her apart the six other candidates vying for the Democratic candidacy, heading into the caucuses on February 5th.Andy McGuire speaking to crowd

“I’m a physician by training and I have an MBA (Master of Business Administration) and I’ve ran a company. The problems that we’re dealing with health care, with Medicaid and mental health, having someone who has mental health experience and who has health care experience, who’s run things in health care and is a doctor, and who’s always going to put that patient first, I think that’s really important right now. And I talked a lot about education and I will be an education governor.”

McGuire is the third Democratic gubernatorial candidate that has stopped in Greene County.
