The Madrid Tigers completed the series sweep over the Chargers after a pair of victories last night in Madrid. However, the Tigers kept ACGC around due to turnover spells by both teams.
The Lady Tigers took the opening game 48-33. The rim seemed to be closed for the Charger girls during the first half. The Chargers scored just nine points in the opening frame, with seven coming from the free-throw line. In the second half, the Lady Tigers committed five turnovers in the first four minutes, allowing the Chargers to cut the lead from 19 to 11. However, Sarah Eagleton and Shayla Peters’ 16 points each stopped the turnover trouble and led the Lady Tigers to their sixth win of the season. Jadeyn Carrick also had 16 points to lead the Chargers, and Sierra O’Brien was unable to find the bottom of the basket.
The first half of the boys game was the opposite for the Charger boys. Noah Nelsen dropped a three to open the game, and the Chargers led for the most of the first half. However, Tiger junior Logan Wicker’s second free throw with nine seconds remaining in the half gave Madrid their first lead of the game. The Tigers pulled away in the second half to claim a 63-49 win. Braden Gibbons only connected on two three-pointers, however he still scored 16 points to lead all scores. Quynton Younker returned to the starting lineup and his usual form with 15 points to lead all Chargers. Head Coach Jake Mohling was extremely pleased with the first half performance, calling it one of the best this season. Unfortunately, there are two halves in every basketball game.
The Charger squads will return home on Friday to battle the Ogden Bulldogs. The doubleheader begins at 6pm with the girls game, followed by the boys. Pre-game coverage begins from Guthrie Center at 5:45 on KKRF2 and the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.
