ADM Tigers

Only one member of the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers wrestling team stood atop the podium at the annual ADM Tiger Invite Saturday in Adel. However, Tiger head wrestling coach Chris Hatchitt said his 126-pound grappler, junior Kolton Benz, impressed him with his tournament performance. “(Kolton) lost a pigtail match, which is a preliminary match to qualify for the tournament and came all the way back and got third place.” Hatchitt said, “He wrestled very well (after his preliminary match). This is his second year wrestling, so he’s still growing but to see him fight through that adversity, that’s a great takeaway from today.”

Benz’s opening loss was against Ames’s Noah Barker by pinfall in the third period (5:01). His pursuit through the consolation bracket started with a pinfall victory against Dominick Brittain of Red Oak in the final second of the first period. Benz won a 7-0 decision win in the consolation quarterfinals against Coon Rapids-Bayard’s Garrett Peterson. Benz saw Barker of Ames in the consolation semifinals and extracted revenge with a 13-2 major decision win to advance to the third-place match. He capped off his run with a second period pinfall victory against Nevada’s Cale Dumbaugh (3:23). Benz, who entered the tournament with a 5-12 overall record, improved his mark to 9 wins and 13 losses.

The ADM wrestling team resumes their season tomorrow in a Raccoon River Conference triangular against the Bondurant-Farrar Bluejays and the Carroll Tigers. First matches are set for 5:30 p.m. at Carroll High School.
