A group of Iowa’s best wrestling teams competed in Urbandale Saturday in the annual Ed Winger Classic.The Adel Desoto-Minburn Tigers wrestling team was among 20 schools represented at the meet and featured multiple 3A programs including Johnston,Southeast Polk, Urbandale, Waukee, and West Des Moines Valley. The Tigers had 10 wrestlers compete in the event with two ending the day on the podium.
ADM junior Andrew Flora, Class 2A’s No. 2 ranked wrestler at 113 pounds, came away with a third-place medal after suffering his first loss on the mat this season. Flora began the day with 19-4 technical fall victory over Urbandale’ Justin Boyles, and a 7-1 decision win the quarterfinals against Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson’s Anthony Humpal. Des Moines Lincoln’s Nathan Kahoe handed Flora his first loss on the mat, grinding out a 5-4 decision win. Flora answered in the consolation semifinals with a 7-0 decision victory over Johnston’s Caleb Helgeson and topped Humpal of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson by a 4-2 decision in the third-place match.
Tiger sophomore Kaden Sutton wrestled in five matches total in Urbandale, finishing sixth overall in the 220-pound bracket. Sutton opened the event with an 8-1 decision win over Centerville’s Brady Clark. Sutton’s quarterfinal match against Glenwood’s Isaac Bales went to overtime with Bales pulling out a 4-2 ultimate tie-breaking win. Sutton guaranteed a spot on the podium with a pinfall win in the consolation second round against Urbandale’s Tanner Teem (5:16). The consolation semifinal round saw North Scott’s Zach Petersen grind out an 8-5 decision win over Sutton. Finally, the fifth-place match West Des Moines Valley’s Beau Lombardi pinned Sutton 2:35 into their match.
The ADM wrestling team resumes their dual season Tuesday in a quadrangular event featuring wrestlers from Perry, Boone, and Woodward-Granger. First grapples are set for 5:30 p.m. at Perry High School.
