The Iowa Department of Public Health has reported that 29 people have died this winter season from the flu.
Greene County Public Health Immunization Coordinator Jill Juergensen says there are lots of ways that the influenza virus can be spread.
“It can be spread by: coughing and sneezing; skin-to-skin contact (with) things like handshakes or hugs; it can be spread through our silva so things like kissing, or sharing drinks or utensils; and it can be spread just by touching contaminated surfaces.”
Juergensen describes what people can do to prevent the flu.
“Best thing to do is get your flu vaccine once a year. Washing your hands several times a day, not just after using the restroom, you want to do it several times. Avoiding crowds and especially avoiding sick people who you know are sick. And covering the three C’s: covering your cough or your sneeze, cleaning your hands like I said, and staying home if you’re sick.”
If you haven’t gotten a flu vaccination yet, Greene County Public Health has a weekly immunization clinic. Their clinic is this Wednesday from 8am to 4:15pm at Greene County Medical Center.
