Iowa state legislature

The current Iowa legislative session is getting warmed up, with the senators and representatives breaking into various subcommittees to decide what bills will be introduced to the floor.

District 10 Senator Jake Chapman says the committee phase is where the legislative session begins to take shape. “That’s really what’s going on right now, is a lot of subcommittee work, that first step of getting legislation passed. And so lots of individual meetings going on right now. We’re also seeing some budget sub meetings, so different committees meeting on what the budget’s going to look like for this upcoming year. It’s an exciting time, you get to see what’s coming out of the woodwork on what people would like to see done this year. And we’ll continue in this phase of the legislative session probably for a couple more weeks. Two or three weeks doing subcommittee work.”

Bills that Chapman will be working on in his subcommittees include: one to eliminate the death tax that could end up being a part of a larger tax policy bill; one to make it easier for property owners to indicate no trespassing areas; also bills covering hunting issues, workers compensation fraud, and energy policy.
