Habitat for Humanity is looking for people serious about homeownership in Perry. Those interested are invited to an informational meeting tomorrow.
Omar Padilla, the Dallas County Habitat Coordinator, says the meeting will be held at the Perry Public Library from 6-8 p.m. “So any family, any person who is not yet a homeowner but wishes to become a homeowner should really come to this meeting. We go through the whole program (and) explain what it would take to qualify, how long it’ll take, what it is that the person is committing to, and answer any questions. We really emphasize the point that we’re not a hand-out program, we’re a hand-up program in that we want partners in this whole process. So we really want to find a qualified homebuyer who is willing to go through the process with us.”
He adds, showing up to the informational meeting is the first step in that process. After potential candidates apply, they will be assessed on their eligibility before being chosen. Once the family is selected, they will go through a process that includes homeownership classes and 400 hours of sweat equity. Padilla says the whole process will take between 8-12 months from the time the family is selected to when they can move in.
