Some big changes were announced at yesterday’s Board of Control meeting of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Gone is the 17-point tiebreaker in helping to determine which teams make the postseason. Only the District champion or teams tying for a district championship will receive automatic playoff berths. All nine games will count toward postseason qualification, and a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) will determine the remaining qualifiers, which will stay at 16 per class for 2018 and ’19. The RPI will use three criteria to determine postseason qualification, and they are:
A-Team’s overall win-loss percentage (accounting for 37.5% of the index.)
B-Team’s opponent’s win-loss percentage (37.5%).
C-Team’s opponent’s opponent’s win-loss percentage (25%). Classification differences between non-district opponents will not affect RPI.
District football assignments for 2018 and ’19 will be released today, which means Greene County will find out officially if they will compete in Class 3A, where they have a total of two wins over the last two seasons, or drop to 2A.
