Junior Anna Kenny maybe the one credited with the heroics of Tuesday’s 50-48 win for the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers girls basketball team (6-10 overall; 5-4 RRC) over Winterset, but contributions from underclassmen kept the Tigers within striking distance late in the game. ADM sophomores Delaney Bertman and Abbie Hlas along with freshman Aniston Smith combined to score 27 of the final 33 points in the comeback victory. The Tigers trailed at halftime 25-17 and was down as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter.
Smith scored five of her seven points in the final minute, tying the ballgame twice. ADM girls basketball coach Rick Dillinger says Smith is a great athlete for the Tigers. “She’s going to be a great shooter, I think, by the time she’s a junior; I’m hoping next year to be honest,” Dillinger said, “She gets better and better. She still panics at times with the ball, but she’s a freshman. Defensively, she can get after you because she has good foot speed.”
Bertman poured in 14 of her team-best 18 points after halftime, while Hlas added eight of her 15 points in the second half. Bertman spoke after Wednesday’s practice about the team’s goal of playing a full game. “Lately we’ve been talking about playing a full four quarters and playing well in all of them,” Bertman said, “(The) Winterset (game) we put it all together, even though the first quarter wasn’t good, we won the other three.”
The win improves ADM’s Raccoon River Conference record to 5-4, and their overall record to 6-10. The Tigers girls and boys basketball teams resume their season Friday on the road against Perry.
