One defensive fundamental in basketball is reading the eyes of your opponent in anticipation of where the next pass will go. Adel-Desoto-Minburn junior Anna Kenny used this basic defensive skill to help the Tigers top the Winterset Huskies on the road in Raccoon River Conference play Tuesday. Tied at 48 with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Kenny jumped the passing lane and poked the ball into ADM’s offensive end. Her speed allowed her to track down the ball with enough time to put the game-winning layup off the glass as time expired.
The Raccoon Valley Radio Network visited with members of the ADM girls basketball team after Wednesday’s practice about their recent wins against Ballard and Winterset. Kenny takes us through the final 10 seconds of the Winterset game. “I saw one of their player’s eyes look over at the person I was guarding, so I decided I was going to try and get (the ball),” Kenny said, “I tipped it, and then I saw no one was ahead of me. I went up for the layup, and I told myself ‘Anna this is not the layup to miss, if theirs a layup to make its this one’ Then it went in, and everyone got excited.”
The win helped ADM overtake Winterset for fourth place in the Raccoon River Conference standings, pushing their league mark to 5-4. The Tigers boys and girls basketball teams resume their conference season in Perry tonight.
