Dallas County Conservation is quite fond of owls, and they have another exciting and popular owl event coming up soon.

Forest Park Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says the program will be held this Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Bear Creek Nature Center in the Kuehn Conservation Area. “We call it the ‘Owl Prowl,’ and we begin at a bonfire (with) hot chocolate, (and) introduce you to the owls of Dallas County, which is the three main ones. So they will be discussing all those. And one of the great things about our naturalists, too, is they’re really good owl callers. So they could do a perfect owl call, the owls all respond, and the woods just come to life! So it’s really cool. People have loved that event for years, it will fill up, so please call us about that.”

Malmberg adds, the three types of owls found in Dallas County include the screech, barred, and great horned owls, though there might also be discussion of the snowy owl, which has been showing up more frequently in recent years. There is no cost to attend the “Owl Prowl,” though registration is required. For more information or to register, call the Forest Park Museum at 515-465-3577.
