This combination makes for some thick stretches of ice on area lakes and reservoirs, and for some, a great opportunity to enjoy ice fishing. However, the recent warmer temperatures warrant some reminders for safe ice fishing.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, smaller bodies of water usually freeze faster and thicker than larger lakes or river backwaters. The DNR recommends four inches of clear blue ice as a minimum for fishing. Winter anglers should be especially careful on ice around submerged trees or emergent vegetation, as this ice tends to be weaker.

Ice conditions can change constantly and its thickness can vary across a body of water. The DNR recommends drilling test holes to measure the thickness and quality of the ice.
