District 20 Representative Clel Baudler is continuing to maintain his primary focus on public safety during the 2018 Iowa legislative session. Baudler would like to use his position as House Public Safety Committee Chair to advance legislation on re-establishing the death penalty in Iowa.
Baudler’s passion for this legislation is clearly evident. “When I came on the (Iowa State) patrol in 1965, Iowa had capital punishment. Governor (Harold) Hughes changed that, and we haven’t had it since then. Because of certain violent, vicious crimes, several members of my committee are very passionate about having a vote on this. I’m going to grant them that ability.”
He also mentioned his desire to get a bill on sanctuary cities through the chambers. The proposed Senate bill would restrict funding for cities that recognize themselves as a sanctuary city. Baudler hopes the bill will be passed verbatim through the House and expects protests during the subcommittee hearing Tuesday morning.
