A single-vehicle wreck Tuesday near Van Meter sent three people to the hospital with unknown injuries, including two small children.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before noon, a 2003 Honda Pilot SUV driven by 70-year-old Patricia Sparks of Adel lost control in the 34000 block of Old Portland Road. Sparks was traveling northbound when she began to swerve on the gravel road and slid sideways before rolling once into the ditch. She had her two great-granddaughters in the vehicle with her at the time. Sparks was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident, and the girls were secured properly in their carseats.

The children were transported by Waukee Emergency Medical Services to Blank Children’s Hospital, while Sparks was transported by Dallas County EMS to Methodist Hospital, both in Des Moines. Their injuries are unknown at this time, but are not expected to be serious. The airbags in the SUV did not deploy, and the damage was estimated at $6,000. The incident was witnessed by Jeremy Feldman, a member of the Van Meter Fire Department, who provided immediate aid at the scene.
