As far as crops are concerned, corn is king in Iowa. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in 2016 Iowa corn farmers produced over 150 billion pounds of corn. That trend looks to continue as weather and technology play a key role in the state’s output.
While the snowy weather outside may be frightful to some, the excess precipitation is vital to a good start on crop production. Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) District Field Manager Jenelle Kracht explains the impact heavy snowfall has on future corn production. “We need that snow for that moisture in the ground. That really gets us started off for a great season come planting time…2018 looks to be another phenomenal year.”
Kracht also mentions that seed companies in general are making tremendous advancements in developing weather resistant traits. ICGA is still accepting registration to the Carroll County Crop Fair this Friday in Coon Rapids. To hear more from Kracht on the fair and the corn outlook for 2018, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
