The opening round of the Class 4A regional basketball tournament takes the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers to Madison County tonight. The Tigers begin their playoff run in the Class 4A Region 6 tournament at Winterset High School against their Raccoon River Conference rivals the Huskies. The two schools split their regular season series against one another with the road team winning each contest.
The last meeting between ADM and Winterset took place at Mel Penrod Gymnasium on January 23, and the contest provided one of the best finishes to a league game this season. ADM overcame an 11 point second half deficit to tie the ballgame at 48 with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. The next offensive possession, Winterset telegraphed a pass to the left wing, which was deflected into ADM’s offensive end by junior guard Anna Kenny. Kenny raced into the frontcourt, secured the ball, and put a fast break layup off the glass as time expired for a 50-48 victory. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network spoke with Kenny the following day, and she says as she went up for the game-winning layup, she was hoping not to miss it,”I saw no one was ahead of me, so I went up for the layup.” Kenny said, “And I told myself “Anna, this is not the layup to miss. If you’re going to make a layup, this is the one to make. Then it went in an everyone was pretty excited.”
Winterset won the initial meeting between the schools, 49-37, on December 8 in Adel. Since the shocking setback to the Tigers, Winterset closed the regular season winning six of their final seven games while ADM suffered losses in three of their last five contests. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network will have the rubber match between conference rivals tonight on True Country K 107.9 and worldwide at raccoonvalleyradio.com and the KKRF mobile app. Live coverage starts with a special Lincoln Savings Bank Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and tip-off set for 7 p.m.
