For most people, purchasing a new vehicle can be a stressful endeavor. Luckily for the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Secondary Roads Department, they typically have money ready to use for such occasions.
Recently, both departments were approved for new vehicle purchases as normal budget items by the Board of Supervisors. The Roads Department came to the Board with a request to buy two 2018 Chevy Silverado flatbed trucks to replace older models. They received bids from several dealerships, but ended up going with Shottenkirk Chevrolet in Waukee, costing $63,361 for a pair of trucks. Shottenkirk wasn’t the lowest bid, but County Engineer Al Miller said he chose them because they’re familiar with the dealers and service, and he also likes keeping money inside Dallas County. Additionally, to save money on the purchase, the Roads Department will install the flatbeds on the chassis themselves.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office was in need of a new unmarked detective vehicle, which was on a five-year replacement schedule. They were able to find a good deal on a 2018 Dodge Durango from Stew Hansen Dodge in Urbandale. The vehicle cost $27,697, but the County was able to trade in their 2012 Jeep Cherokee for $7,500, bringing the total price down to $20,197. The Supervisors approved both purchase requests, to be paid out of each department’s vehicle budget.
