Last month’s government shutdown, while brief, caused some concern for Americans across the country. It also prompted a promise from Iowa District 3 Representative David Young to donate his paycheck during the shutdown. Young kept his promise, as he donated three days worth of pay to the Food Bank of Iowa.
Young commented on the reason he and other members of Congress decided to complete the gesture. “When the Government shuts down I don’t think anybody wins, especially those who are working in public service for our government. During those days, federal workers weren’t getting paid. From our military, to the farm service agencies, to other branches of our federal government. I just thought it was the right thing to give my salary for those three days to a charity.”
A recently passed budget-bill signals the end of shutdown conversations until 2019. To hear more from Young on this and other topics from Washington, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
