Many people in Iowa are still eligible to purchase insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, but the deadline for the special enrollment period is approaching.

Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said there were several thousand Iowans who lost health care coverage due to the departures of Aetna, Wellmark, and Grunderson from the ACA market. However, those who lost their coverage can still get coverage through Medica, though they must sign up before March 1st. Ommen adds, most people enrolling in the marketplace are eligible for federal subsidies, which have all but become a necessity for affording individual health insurance plans.

The uncertainty over the future of the ACA led to all but Medica leaving the marketplace in Iowa. Ommen is hopeful Congress will fix the problem soon, but until then he says his office will help anyone who needs aid in deciding what plan would be best for them.
