Spring sports at Greene County High School are getting underway with staggered starts. Boys and girls track & field is underway with Monday’s practice being the first one on the Linduska Field track. Boys’ head coach Chad Morton reports a squad of 35, while girls’ coach Derek Merk told Raccoon Valley Radio he has 23 out.

This is the first time boys and girls soccer teams will be fielded by Greene County. Soccer players either went to Boone or Carroll in the past. Boys’ soccer practice officially starts March 12 with the girls starting March 19. Golf for girls and boys will get underway later in March.

Coach Morton was asked his opinion about soccer being played here for the first time. “I think it’s great we have soccer. If it works out right we should have twice as many kids involved in activities in the Spring of the year.” Official numbers won’t be known until after soccer and golf practices get underway, but the coach could be spot on with his assessment. So far in the 2017-18 school year, numbers have gone up over last school year in nearly every sport, and in some cases, the increases have been significant.
