Greene County SheriffThe Greene County Sheriff’s office is warning the public about a phone scam.

Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio the scammers claim they are representatives of the IRS. They call victims telling them they are behind on their taxes and demand payment. The scammers claim that if the victim doesn’t pay them, then the victim will be arrested or their property will be seized. The scammers are from India and Williams notes that it’s impossible for them to track down the individuals.

Sheriff Williams urges anyone who receives calls like this not to give out personal information, but hang up immediate. He adds that the scammers may call multiple times, using different numbers. If you receive a call from a number you don’t recognize, don’t answer it. Williams notes that the IRS will send you a letter and they will not contact you by phone. You can also report the scam to the law enforcement center’s non-emergency number at 386-2136.
