Perry Fire 2-28

No one was injured after a fire broke out in a second floor apartment in downtown Perry early Wednesday morning.

At 4:45 a.m., the Perry Police Dispatch received two calls reporting the fire from residents in the apartments located at 1306 2nd Street. The caller who lived in the apartment facing 2nd Street, where the fire started, said she was possibly trapped. The police officers were able to get the occupant out safely and all other residents were accounted for.

When the Perry Fire Department arrived on scene, they found the apartment engulfed in flames. They worked quickly to fight it back to keep it from spreading to the other two apartments in the building, as well as from neighboring buildings. The other two apartments and the area below suffered smoke and water damage, but were otherwise unharmed. Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds says they believe the cause was an unattended candle. The police and fire departments were assisted at the scene by the Perry Public Works Department and Perry First Responders.
