The Greene County Fine Arts Department is hitting a busy part of the school year.
High school art teacher Sarah Stott says 15 students earned blue ribbons for their art pieces that were showcased at the Heart of Iowa Conference Fine Arts Festival in Nevada last week. Students won in categories for: pastel, ink pen, photography, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, oils, colored pencils, and mixed media. A full list of results can be found below.
As for the choir department, Director David Heupel says 11 students participated in the conference honor choir. The jazz choir “Jazzatonics” also placed third in Class 3A at their most recent contest last weekend in Emmetsburg. Plus, their backup band won best overall combo. One final jazz choir contest will be next month at Southwest Iowa Community College.
Band Director Wes Anderson says 13 students participated in the conference honor band last week. The jazz band didn’t qualify this year for the Iowa Jazz Championships, but Anderson isn’t discouraged, since the full jazz band will return next year.
“We’ve only got five returners but we’ve also got zero seniors. Really if you think about it, our group shouldn’t change for the next two years. We’ll probably add some more eighth graders that will come into the mix too. But this should be the same group chemistry that we’re going to have for two years. It’s pretty exciting.”
The next upcoming event is March 24th, when the high school hosts the Iowa High School Music Association Solo and Small Ensemble contest.
