La Paris for Sale

The building on the corner of 2nd Street and Willis Avenue in Perry is currently in a state of limbo.

Signs recently went up in the windows of the building, advertising that it is now for lease through Keller Williams Commercial in Des Moines. Keller Williams Agent Matt Shaw dispelled rumors that the building was for sale, but indicated it could be sold if the price is right. Jacqueline Riekena is the current owner after she purchased it in November of 2016. She had ambitious plans for the 11,000 square-foot building, which she christened “La Paris.” At a ceremonial groundbreaking event last September, Riekena outlined her plan for the building, which was to include several different kinds of stores. Her original hope was to have the first two businesses operational by November 1st, 2017, with the remainder completed by February of this year.

Those plans haven’t came to fruition, however, and at least for now it appears the building’s future is in flux. Currently the plans are still to update the interior while making exterior improvements throughout the spring. Before Riekena purchased it, the building was the home of El Rey Market, and before that the Woolworth store.
